CHRISTENSEN, JAMES, JEFFREY L. CONKLIN, AND BARRY W. FREEMAN. Physiologic specialization at esophagogastric junction in three species. Am. J. Physiol. 225(6): 1265-1270. 1973.-In opossums, cats, and monkeys comparisons were made of length-resting tension relationships and responses to low-frequency electrical field stimulation among serial 2 mm-wide strips cut transversely from the esophagogastric junction and adjacent stomach and esophageal body. Three regions could be distinguished on the basis of the nature of the response to field stimulation. Strips from the stomach contracted during stimulation; those from the esophageal body contracted briefly after the end of the stimulus; strips from the esophagogastric junction relaxed during stimulation. Transitional areas lay between the three regions showing these tetrodotoxin-sensitive responses. The length-resting tension slopes of strips from the esophagogastric junction were steeper than those of strips from the stomach and esophageal body. The strips which relaxed with field stimulation included those with the steepest slopes of the length-resting tension relationship. Slopes of length-resting tension were poorly correlated with muscle mass. In all three species, intrinsic specialization occurs at the esophagogastric junction in the nature of the innervation and in the mechanical properties of the inner muscle layer.

Teratoma at the esophagogastric junction in a neonate.
BACKGROUND Teratoma at the esophagogastric junction is extremely rare. CASE REPORT A 26-day-old male neonate who presented with vomiting and melena. OBSERVATION Investigations revealed a mass at the esophagogastric junction, which was excised and confirmed to be a teratoma. OUTCOME A fistula at the lower end of the esophagus and an esophageal hiatal hernia were observed as complications. ...

BACKGROUND The incidence of adenocarcinoma of the esophagogastric junction is increasing. This study aims to evaluate the clinicopathological features of Chinese patients with adenocarcinoma of the esophagogastric junction and to define prognostic factors. METHODS We retrospectively reviewed a database of 382 consecutive patients with adenocarcinoma of the esophagogastric junction at the Firs...
متن کاملMicrodissection of Human Esophagogastric Junction Wall with Phase-contrast X-ray CT Imaging
Phase-contrast x-ray imaging using an x-ray interferometer has great potential to reveal the structures inside soft tissues, because the sensitivity of this method to hydrogen, carbon, nitrogen, and oxygen is about 1000 times higher than that of the absorption-contrast x-ray method. In this study, we used phase-contrast X-ray CT to investigate human resected esophagogastric junction. This techn...

OBJECTIVE To assess the outcome of surgical therapy based on a topographic/anatomical classification of adenocarcinoma of the esophagogastric junction. SUMMARY BACKGROUND DATA Because of its borderline location between the stomach and esophagus, the choice of surgical strategy for patients with adenocarcinoma of the esophagogastric junction is controversial. METHODS In a large single-center...
متن کاملPseudoachalasia presenting 20 years after Nissen fundoplication: a case report
BACKGROUND Pseudoachalasia is a rare diagnosis manifested by clinical and physiologic symptoms of achalasia, with alternative etiology for outflow obstruction. While malignancy is a frequent cause of pseudoachalasia, prior surgical intervention especially surgery involving the esophagogastric junction, may result in a misdiagnosis of achalasia. CASE PRESENTATION We present a case of a 70 year...
